England along with Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing win, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the groups play out according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
