The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
