The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
