On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
